The Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) is a serious pest of hemlock trees.  Left untreated, a tree may die from an infestation in just a few years.  The HWA is first noticed by the small, white woolly masses that it spins as a cocoon on the underside of the hemlock needle.  The adelgid has piercing mouthparts that it uses to suck the sap from the base of the needle.

Trees can become heavily infested in just a short time and damage to the tree can occur very quickly if the tree is already in poor health.
Larger trees usually become infested in the top part of the tree first, due to transport of the adelgid by wind and birds. Therefore, large trees should be treated before the appearance of the wool on lower branches.  Owners should not wait until larger trees become gray in appearance, it may be too late to save them.  Appalachian Niche offers treatment of the hemlock woolly adelgid.
