There are more than 30 species of lace bugs in NC, however, most are not considered pests. Probably the best known of the lace bugs is the azalea lace bug. Most lace bugs prefer a specific type of host plant in which to feed on and usually feed on the underside of the leaf. Leaves have yellowish spots and may turn yellow and drop off prematurely. A distinguishing characteristic of lace bug infestations are the small, black, tar like spots they leave on the underside of the plant's leaves. Appalachian Niche offers identification and control of the lace bug.
