There are many types of scale insects in NC. They affect a variety of plants by sucking fluids from the plant either from the stem, leaf, or branch of the affected plant, possibly causing it to wilt. Sometimes sooty mold grows on the honeydew that is produced by the insect. This fungus can inhibit photosynthesis by the plant and leave the plant looking unsightly. Appalachian Niche offers identification and control of the scale insect.
