The web worm usually shows up in western NC in late summer and early fall. The webs first show up as small webs, but quickly grow and engulf more branches. Inside the web are several caterpillars which are feeding on the leaves of the affected tree. Usually, web worms do not endanger a tree's health, just make it unsightly. However, if a tree is heavily infested several years in a row, the tree may die. Appalachian Niche offers control of the web worm.
